Sam spent 23 years in the Marine Corps and attained the rank of sargeant major; the highest enlisted rank. He went to Vietnam in April of 1968 for a 13 month tour. He was in the same squadron with brother Jim Acreback and flew with him. Jim was a pilot and Sam was a gunner on Jim's crew. George DeWeese
Then...! Now...!
George DeWeese

I graduated from SEMO in 1964 and was fortunate enough to enlist in the Missouri Air National Guard before I was drafted. Returned home after about a six month active duty in May 1965. I took a job in procurement with the then McDonnell Aircraft Company in July 1965. Some of you may remember I met and dated Mary Ann (nee Dring) at Cape; she graduated in 1965 and taught at Cleveland High School from '65 to ''73. Mary Ann and I were married in July 1966. She'll tell you we've been happily married for 5 years - she just can't remember which 5 they were!

We have 3 children: Mark (26), a taxidermist for Schwarz Studios, was married in June 2001; Beth (25), an UMSL graduate just left Bank of America after 5 years and became a buyer at Boeing - Beth has a serious boyfriend, a very nice young man, but no ring yet (I'm considering giving him the money!); and Mike (22) who is a graduate of the St. Louis Broadcast Center and as another brother put it - is an aspiring Howard Stern, but no full time broadcast job yet.

I'm still with McDonnell Douglas, now a wholly owned subsidiary of the Boeing Company in senior procurement management - it'll be 38 years in July 2003. And, it'll be 37 years next July with Mary Ann. I've been blessed with a great career, a wonderful wife, three really neat kids and good health. Life is good! We live in South St. Louis County.

Ed McGrew
Then...! Now...!
Ed (Sleepy) McGrew

After graduating from Semo in '68, I started teaching school, Nancy and I married in December of '68. After teaching school two years, I too received "greetings" and went into the Army in June of '70. I was given the option of OCS, but they told us the only areas open were artillery, armor, and infantry, and I thought that 2nd Lts in those areas would be sent straight to Viet Nam. I decided to avoid getting shot at. After fracturing a leg in infantry AIT, I managed to become a clerk, and spent my service time in Louisiana and Germany (near Stuttgart).

I returned to education, became a guidance counselor, and then a principal. (Can you imagine me as a school administrator?) I retired in June of 2000, but still work part time in a small school district in North Cape Girardeau County as a school pscyhological examiner.

Nancy and I have three children and one granddaughter. My daughter, Kelle, is married and she, her husband and daughter live near Mountain Grove, Mo. Her husband teaches school, she is currently a teacher assistant in a pre-school, and plans to become a teacher. Our granddaughter is the joy of our lives, we spend as much time with her as possible. My oldest son lives in Cape Girardeau, and still is trying to "find himself" My youngest son joined the Navy just out of high school. He is a cryptologist, currently is based in Misawa, Japan. He serves as aircrew aboard a surveillance airplane, an EP-3 Orion. That's the same type of airplane that was forced down in China. I spend a lot of time worried about him. He's 21, and thinks he's bullet-proof.

For a while, I was active with the fraternity. I served on the Housing Board for a while. When I became a school administrator, I had less and less free time, and consequently became less active. I've only been to a few Homecoming gatherings since college even though I live in Cape Girardeau. With family and work, I just got out of the habit.
