After graduation I managed to get into the Army Reserves and went to St. Louis to find a job and wait for my call up. I thought I’d take my Marketing degree and get a job in marketing but I then discovered the Catch 22 of your first job, they wanted marketing experience – so I got a job selling marketing information with Dun & Bradstreet. That’s when my nomadic life began. I was in St. Louis for six months before active duty and a year after. Used to see a lot of Terry Maxwell, Roy Spiekermann, Mike Sabo and Ray Overmann – even shared an apartment with Ray for awhile – that was an experience! Then D&B started moving me – five times in the next five years. Spent ten years with them internationally and eventually ended up in New Jersey as President of their Information Service Division.

After 21 years I was seduced away by promises of building a billion dollar Information Company for GTE and the enticement of living in Tampa, Fl. while I was doing it. Well, what I ended up with was a mismatch of 12 unrelated companies all over the country that were all a mess. I even had a company that published the Alaskan MILEPOST book – Kelly should be familiar with that – it tracks sights at each mile marker along the entire length of the Alaskan Highway starting at Dawson Creek, Mile 0 and ending at mile 1520 at Fairbanks. After a few years managing this mess I moved to Minneapolis [that was shock to the system] to run Ceridian (Control Data/SBC) Employer Service a payroll/hr company. After that I ran a couple of public companies in the medical & information fields{Medicus & Dialog] in Chicago and ended up selling both of them. The past 5 years I have been Huntsville, Alabama running a technology company that provides software & services to 23,000 libraries worldwide, which provides a lot of opportunity for travel. I bought a company in St. Louis a couple of years and get there occasionally. And my parents still live in Cape – celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary a couple of years ago. My wife, Barbara and I enjoy the warmer weather here and the chance to play golf year round but we do miss Evanston, IL – after all, this is Alabama where the state slogan is “At least we’re not Mississippi”. I have a daughter, Whitney who lives in Minneapolis and works in the travel incentive business – she likes the cold weather.

I have been retired and in Festus for about 1 1/2 years.
After graduating from Cape I went to work for PPG Industries, and they suggested that I join the National Guard. I did and my unit was activated for 19 months in 1968. Half the unit went to Viet Nam. I spent the entire 19 months at Ft, Benning. I got out in 1970 and married a local girl and have remained married. I was transferred to Decatur, Il. for 20 years and retired in July 2005. I was Manager of Information Systems, and worked in computing my entire career.
I now play golf at least twice a week and ping pong a couple times a week. Don't laugh there are five of us who play and are very competitive and get a very good workout.
We have one son who is now 35, married and lives in St. Charles, Mo.
